Disney said “We’re going to remake Pinocchio” and Guillermo Del Toro said, “Okay, but are you going to make it a boring watered-down version of the already tame one you made in the 40s? Or is there going to be abundant Jesus imagery? Angry grief-fuelled alcoholism? A fascist youth redemption arc? The ugliest most disgusting whale you’ve ever possibly imagined? Donnie Darko psychopomps? Eldritch seraphim-sphinxes of death incarnate? Is Pinocchio going to be assassinated by The Actual Benito Mussolini?”
Things I expected in Del Toro’s Pinocchio:
- A cute little puppet boy
- Characters dancing and having fun
- A talking cricket
- Some sad bits that add to the depth of the film and make the happy parts more meaningful
Things I did not expect in Del Toro’s Pinocchio:
- Pinocchio pointing out hypocrisy in Christian beliefs and morals
- Geppetto becoming an alcoholic due to his depression following the death of his son
- Geppetto’s son dying from a bombing during world war 1
- Pinocchio telling Mussolini to eat shit and immediately getting shot
- Pinocchio being kidnapped and sent to a facist child soldier camp
Rosaline (the Disney+ film) is what Persuasion (2022) thought it was.
Is it inaccurate? Yes. Do I care? No.
